Workforce Success Story

This participant came to us for benefits screening April 2014. She was in need of assistance with utilities and food stamps. Participant at the time was is a student in the ACC IBEST Health Information Technology Program. She is married and with a teenage daughter. Her husband had medical issues and unable to work. Her only income was her disability. Her food stamps had lapsed due to not completing and submitting her renewal application. They were barely breaking even each month and the extra expenses for transportation to and from her husband’s doctor appointments, her travel to clinical site locations and vehicle repairs caused her to need assistance. A county application was completed and submitted for assistance with her CPS bill and participant was instructed to review, complete and submit her food stamp application immediately to receive her food stamp assistance again. In addition she was issued a gas card to purchase gas to get to and from school.

In August 2014 participant successfully completed IBEST job training in Health Information Technology Certificate through Alamo Colleges. She is continuing her education to earn an Associate’s of Applied Science Degree in Health Information Technology.

Participant has said without this assistance she could not have continued her studies. She is scheduled to graduate May 2016.
